Last night was our second “Knavesmire Night” following Thursday 5th August and I thought it worked really well. Although quite a number of members are away this week, the Knavesmire brought together folk who had climbed and walked at different locations, or not at all, plus it was a pleasure to see Linda again after some 2 years. I imagine Linda saw the Knavesmire Night on the website as she was not (until now) in the WhatsApp group. A bubbling discussion included many plans and aspirations to sow the seeds of future trips. So this was meeting all of its objectives and I hope we can continue to support a monthly York pub night in coming months.
ANDREWAndrewSpectatorI am a regular user of Skin So Soft against Scottish midges, and I think it is effective. It seems to form a slightly oily layer on the skin, so that midges may not be deterred from landing (you can feel slight tickles) but they seem not to bite.
Cannot say whether it would deter ticks. I’ve only been ticked once. Four of us camped near the idyllic (but tragic) ruin of Ardvreck Castle on Loch Assynt and we discovered several ticks each during the car drive the following morning. No ill effects thankfully. The lovely grass we camped upon, was probably a sheep grazing.
A.AndrewSpectatorWith a few of the usual suspects, I’ll be in Kinlochleven this Thursday.
AndrewAndrewSpectatorNathan is the Chief of Whatsapp, so no doubt he will see this and add you, Adam. The normal form for Thursday evenings has been to nominate a crag on the Forum (usually Scugdale/ Slipstones / Almscliff / Brimham ). and maybe arrange lifts. Day trips and weekends are most commonly arranged “ad hoc”.
After climbing on Thursdays, it was the custom for decades (literally) to adjourn to the pub in York. This was a valuable time for people to chat and make future plans, joined perhaps by folk who had not been out that evening. However in recent years attendances at the Knavesmire were low, as people have simply gone home. In the winter of 2019-20 we got more attendance by trying pubs local to Harrogate Wall, and intended to try others local to the outdoor venues. So this question will crop up again as Thursdays resume.
On the one hand, if 12 or so have just been climbing, it’s easy to slip into a local pub for a swift one, and helpful for Members who don’t live in York. Conversely, a prescence in the city makes us accessible to non-climbers, social climbers, and prospective new members. A dilemma.
ANDREWAndrewSpectatorAs discussed, unfortunately we are booked to be away in Oban in late May, (God willing)
