Our social arrangements for Thursday nights are changing. Please read on for details.
For some time, attendances at the Knavesmire at 10 pm have frequently been down to 2, 3, or 4.
A significant number of active members do not live in York nowadays; others feel the timing is too late for them. This was discussed at the AGM of course.
So we have tried going straight from the climbing wall to a pub nearby. For the last 3 weeks, this has resulted in a good social group of 10 or 12, and it’s time-efficient too. I was dropped off at home by 11pm, some went earlier. Informal social interaction is important: it’s part of the ‘glue” which joins us together. You can chat to a range of people, …….and make plans.
Yet it is also desirable to maintain some social base in York. Not everyone is a climber. Some prospective new members, particularly non-climbers, might want to meet locally. Also, members with injuries, illness or work overload may want to stay in touch over a beer.
Our Committee decided on Tuesday to go for a pub which is local to the climbing wall or outdoor crag, most Thursdays henceforth. However on the FIRST THURSDAY IN EVERY MONTH we will meet back at the Knavesmire. We hope that as a monthly “occasion” the Knavesmire Thursdays will be well supported, both by York-based climbers returning from Harrogate, and others who will stir from the fireside. This will potentially give a better experience all round, and a jolly group at the Knavesmire will be more attractive to newcomers. The Committee also plans to supplement our programme with a small number of social nights such as the highly successful curry night and pizza night last year.
I hope the whole Club will together make a buzzing social programme in 2020 and look forward to seeing all your smiling faces on some or all of these occasions. Thanks for reading !
