A beginners guide to kit and courses on winter mountaineering.
Just passing on some information recently received. I’ve attached a link to Rab UK which has a lot of helpful advice for aspiring Scottish winter mountaineers. It gives a good idea about the kit and knowledge required for a safe and comfortable trip to the winter hills. Of course other brands are available when it comes to purchasing kit or training courses.
Mountaineering Scotland ran a couple of hour long webinars on Winter safety and activities recently. They are available on youtube via the links below. The first is aimed at beginners but does cover some great revision for the experienced. From kit to plans and avalanche awareness.
The second although entitled for walkers includes material aimed at the Winter climber as well. It covers much of the same ground as the first but includes a really good section on decision making and greater detail on avalanches and incidents.
I think anyone new to Winter Mountaineering would benefit from watching both, skipping the repeated bits, but old hands will get more out of the second.
