Dear All
I have recently been contacted by Rowena from the Tibet Support Group to inform us about a talk taking place in York later this month. Please see the email below and information. Let me know if you require any further information.
Regards
PennyHello,
I just wondered if any of your members may be interested in a talk that I’m organising about the attempts on Everest in the 1920’s. I’m part of a Tibet Support Group so the focus is more on the culture of Tibet at that time, the landscapes etc. rather than the mountaineering but I thought all the same some of your members may be interested especially as the talk is being given by Christopher Norton, grandson of Edward Norton who led the 1924 expedition.
I’ve attached a flier that gives more information. I’d be grateful if you could circulate it if it seems appropriate.
Many thanks and my best wishes,
Rowena

through the eyes of the Mount Everest expeditions
by Christopher Norton
7pm Wednesday 24th January
at the Friends Meeting House, Friargate, York YO1 9RL
Suggested donation £5/£3 concessionsThe pioneering Everest expeditions of 1921, 1922 and 1924 are remembered for their heroic attempts on the mountain, culminating in the loss of Mallory and Irvine. But they were much more than mountaineering expeditions. The approaches to Everest were completely unknown territory to Europeans at the time and the expeditions included surveyors, geologists, naturalists, photographers and artists who bought back a wealth of new information about the country and its people. The talk will explore and illustrate some of the written accounts, photographs and paintings which give a memorable picture of the lost world of pre 1950 Tibet.
Christopher Norton is the grandson of Edward Norton who led the expedition to Everest in 1924 and himself climbed to record heights on the mountain in both 1922 and 1924. He has recently published his grandfather’s Everest diaries and sketchbooks entitled Everest Revealed. -
