Hi all
The Swiss International Mountain Marathon (SIMM) is closely related to the OMM (formerly KIMM) and follows the traditional 2 day mountain marathon format. For those not in the know, this is 2 days spent navigating whilst running or walking in the mountains in pairs being self-sufficient ie you carry food, shelter (tent), sleeping bags, stove etc. Typically 2 types of course: Linear – there are set control points that you must visit in the prescribed order (how you get from one control and the next is entirely up to you and depends a lot on how good your navigation and route finding is. All people on that course will visit controls in the same order.
The second type of course is a “score” course, where the idea is to score as many points as you can in the allotted time. In this it’s 5 hours each day. This not only requires excellent navigation, but also estimation of timing, strategy and tactics.
I’m thinking about doing this next year, always fancied doing a MM in bigger terrain than UK mountains, and noticed that there’s a discount for club’s entering together. One interesting option for any of you MM virgins is that there is the option of entering a team that’s bigger than 2, so a bunch of friends could just have a great weekend out in the mountains.
Let me know thoughts or any questions you might have.
Andy
