Sooner or later, if you spend time in the mountains, or at a climbing crag, you may need to manage a casualty or apply some first aid. We have encountered a number of emergency situations over the years. Help can take some time to arrive.
The Club is able to book an Instructor directly, and for years we’ve been able to get First Aid Training for only 50% or 60% of the normal cost to an individual. (£75 last year). For this you get a 2-day course in York over a weekend in the autumn, and a Certificate of Rescue Emergency Care Level 2 which is the basic level of first aid for Summer or Winter MLC, also RCI and I believe other sports.
We begin by asking for expressions of interest. Once enough folk are “possibles” we’ll agree the best autumn weekend to run the course.
So for up-to-date training (just in case something comes unstuck) at a bargain cost, please let me know your interest and I will put a 2023 Course together.ANDREW
The REC Level 2 is a 2-day course particularly oriented to first aid in a mountain environment, and it covers all the stuff eg wounds, breakages, heart attacks, hypothermia etc etc. There is no examination. Upon completion of the course you get a Certificate valid for 3 years.
Courses can typically cost £120 or more, and unless one is available locally, there could be travel plus accommodation on top. However, in previous years York MC has been able to hire an Instructor and a York venue, and put together a private course. Financially, if we can sell all 12 places, members have got Certificates for a cost of about £75. Exact costs for 2023 are not yet confirmed.

Unfortunately, stuff does happen, and has happened. Members have learnt/refreshed on what to do in most of the last 15 years, and I think everyone who’s done it has enjoyed the courses.
ANDREWJuly 1, 2023 at 8:05 pm #16991Dave MModeratorThe cut-off date for committing to the annual First Aid Course is fast approaching. Members who are not regularly kept up to date with first aid training are strongly recommended to maintain a basic proficiency and this course, at the discounted rate, is another big bonus of club membership.
The 16 hour course is enjoyable, not dependent on weather, practical and covers many aspects of first aid in the mountaineering environment including updates to personal equipment available, technology and advice on how to prevent or deal with a medical emergency. Some elements of the course which may help you save a life are simple and obvious but you may not have previously considered.
Last year we ran the course in December with 12 people and an instructor at Heslington, York for a cost of £75 each. We would like to do the same again.
Please, if you are interested in joining the course later this year, get in touch with Andrew either directly or via this forum. We need more numbers to express an interest by the end of this week or the course may not run.
Thanks,
Dave M

July 3, 2023 at 11:19 am #16996AndrewSpectatorThanks Ewart.
Can we get a few more names please to make the course viable for 2023 ?
Its an interesting and fun weekend in late autumn when you’re not missing much outdoors anyway, and cracking value for money.Seven or eight serious situations over the years have shown that up-to-date knowledge of this should be in the skill set just like map reading or belaying (tho less used !!). But we need to assess, this month, whether enough people are willing, in order to set a course up for autumn.
