I’ve been doing a bit of a sort out and have been idly wondering what I can ask Santa for (I think that I’ve been good enough to get a present this year!).

My thoughts have taken me to getting a new winter mountaineering sack and I’ve been doing some electronic window shopping. Aside from all the usual venues for this, I’ve looked at Scottish Mountain Gear and Aiguille Alpine – has anyone used their rucksacks? If you have, any views?

I’ve recently bought a new mountaineering rucksack. Got a Rab Ascendor 45/50. Very happy with it. Lightweight, unfussy and practical. https://rab.equipment/uk/rab-ascendor-45-50l-mountain-pack

I bought mine at Needlesports. Cost me £135

I haven’t used the rucksacks you mentioned but have done a lot of looking around over the last year or two and think that, for the price, the Rab is a decent option for an all-season rucksack.

The Rab has tempted me and a couple from Deuter (the Fresscape 40 and the Guide 44+) have also been throwing their hat in the ring!

I been looking at a new winter Mountaineering rucksack myself, as could do with a vbigger size.
    I been looking at –

    • Mammut trion nordwand 38l. But the shoulder straps are putting me off.

    • la sportiva sunlite 40l. It seems good just can’t get a lot of information or images about it.

    • Grivel alpine pro 40+10l. At the moment it’s top ranking, just don’t know if it’s to big.

Size is always an issue! Mine is a 45L one and that is great for a day on the hill in winter conditions – I can get in warm kit, waterproofs, food and flask, all the safety kit (shovel, probe, bombers first aid kit, blizzard bag etc) and can squeeze a helmet in if needs be.

It all depends on well you can pack…
