I’m considering a trip up Cross Fell (and may be out to Great Dun Fell as well) this Wednesday (5th June).
Ideally, park at Kirkland (car sharing would be good) and then up on to the fells and sleep at Greg’s Hut. Last light in the dale is at 2141 so it may mean a bit of navigation by headtorch depending on when we start.
We would need an early start in the morning and then straight back down to path to Kirkland.
Giles – I’ve done exactly what you are proposing twice now. On one occasion it was February and we set off 20 mins before dark.
It will be light up there probably till way past 23:00. It’s a new moon tomorrow so no light from the big cheesy thing.
The track that goes up from Kirkland (good car parking), is very easy to follow – it branches off left at approx 680m, but the bridleway going straight on takes you to Greg’s Hut.
Be aware that Cross Fell is notorious for having dense cloud – we very nearly walked straight past it on one occasion.
I can’t make it but have fun it’s a great place and you might have the hut all to yourself as it’s not a weekend.

Thank you for posting and inviting members to join you on your midweek adventure – sounds great! We are heading to Wales so sadly can’t make it on this occasion.
