Hey,
I would like some advice on maps. What is people opinion / experience of Harvey Ultramap? I typically use OS and appreciate that Harvey use a different key and scale to OS. However the Harvey Ultramap range covers the national parks and therefore could be a good choice? I’ll be using this map for Scottish winter, with occasional summer use.
Any experience or options would be appreciated.
Matt
Hi Matt. I prefer OS maps personally. I like their clarity and incredible detail, both for mountains & lowland, and for finding that tiny yellow lane in the middle of Devon. That said Harvey’s are good with their contour colour scheme and the 40k scale might be better for the larger Scottish landscape. And Harvey’s are waterproof & light.

I’ve never used proper Harveys but frankly for UK climbing and mountaineering and especially in Winter I barely use a map at all when on the ground. The OS maps are good for detailed planning and packing away in case of emergency but I’d agree with Andrew the most useful ones are the BMC ones for compactness and they list the main crags and outcrops. In reality no map shows or can show winter routes or crags in great detail. The planning detail you need comes from route descriptions or google earth or even youtube. Other than that its larger features and the BMC maps are fine for that.
See you at the goat tomorrow ?
