The planned weekend trip to the Lake District is only 3 and a bit weeks away. With luck the weather will stay fine and the tourists stay in Keswick. We are aiming for Coniston with Dow Crag the main venue for climbing and a good selection of walks in the area.

I have spoken to the owner of the Coniston Hall Campsite http://conistonhallcampsite.co.uk/ and he is confident that there will be space for us on his site, no booking required. Personally, I would recommend you get there in good time to be sure of a space since everywhere else in the region is apparently full already until the end of summer. Should anyone need a lift or to borrow camping equipment then please let us know and we’ll do our best to help.

There is no set agenda and members may join for any part of the weekend if not the whole duration. Please let us know if you intend to come along at any time so nobody misses out and climbing or walking partners can be matched if necessary, for appropriate aims. Please post on the forum or Whatsapp if you are going to attend and we can fine tune detail as we get nearer to the date.

    Cheers, Dave M

Just a bit more info for those planning on joining in at Coniston this weekend.

The weather forecast remains good for Friday and Saturday but there is a probable deterioration on Sunday though possibly OK for climbing in the morning.

The A66 has a 40mph contraflow section to the west of Barnard Castle. Today the traffic was flowing without any problems. Car parking at Walna Scar car park is pay and display but the pay machine was not working today. The RINGO App is in use as an alternative at this car park and works well. Best to download it before you get there to save time. Cost for parking is £9 for a full day or £4.80 for 4 hours.

Walk in to the crag from Walna Scar is almost exactly 2 miles and takes about an hour. Good path, mostly level and straight forward navigation. Walk in from the campsite will be at least an hour more.

The Coniston Hall Campsite is easy to find and the owner has no doubt that the weekend will not see them reach capacity. John J and I will get there at about lunchtime and send a message on WhatsApp to describe where we are pitched in our tents. We will climb at Dow in the afternoon and return in the evening. We expect to make an early start on Saturday morning to take advantage of the weather and be ahead of the traffic up to Walna Scar car park.

If anyone is interested in coming along please let me know by Friday morning so I can make sure we secure a suitable area to congregate all tents and vans.

    Cheers all, Dave M
