Once again, as usual in June, I’m seeking expressions of interest to see if we can run a First Aid Course in October or November this year. For anyone who does not know, we have successfully run a course almost every year since 2008.
Sooner or later, if you spend time in the mountains, you may need to manage a casualty or apply some first aid. We have encountered a number of emergency situations over the years. If you are up the mountain several hours from help it makes sense for every mountain-goer to know the basics.
The most appropriate training is arguably the Rescue Emergency Care Level 2 16-hour course. A Certificate of Attendance on this course is the basic level of first aid which is required for those applying for (or continuing to hold) Summer or Winter MLC, also SPA and I believe other sports.
The REC Level 2 is a 2-day course particularly oriented to first aid in a mountain environment, and it obviously covers all the stuff eg wounds, breakages, heart attacks, hypothermia etc etc. There is no examination, but upon completion of the course you get a Certificate valid for 3 years. The normal “market” cost to attend a course was about £120, likely a bit more now, and on top of that you would normally have to travel to (eg) Hathersage or Plas-y-Brenin or somewhere, so with fuel and accommodation your wallet would be lightened to the tune of about £180.
However, in previous years York MC has been able to hire an Instructor and a York venue, and put together a private course for mostly York MC Members. (with a leavening of Heslington Scout Group) There are 12 places available. The result has been, that if we can sell all 12 places, members have got Certificates for a cost of about £75……. a less than half price bargain. At the moment I can’t be sure of costs for 2019 so it may be £80 or £85 this year.To begin with, I am just asking for expressions of interest, assuming the course would be over a weekend in October or November. It runs from 9.00 to 17.00 Saturday and Sunday. If you are interested in taking the course, please go to the Doodle Poll at https://doodle.com/poll/su54m7zs866w36xq and by clicking on the “Saturday” dates, indicate your availability for FULL WEEKENDS from 28th September. Once we have a minimum of 7 people we can commit to the course and collect money

July 10, 2019 at 5:20 pm #12727AndrewSpectatorSo if something happens to your mate, at the crag, or up the hill, will you know what to do ? Things can, and do, occur, so should your mates be able to rely on you to know how to help them ?
We have now reached the usual “critical mass” of 7 participants to commit to a First Aid course this autumn (and I am waiting response from No 8).
So here is a further bit of food for thought; if you haven’t done first aid in recent years, please consider taking one of the remaining 4 places.
From the responses on the Doodle Poll, https://doodle.com/poll/su54m7zs866w36xq the dates for the course will be chosen from the weekends of 19 October, or November 16 / 23 / 30ANDREW E
July 25, 2019 at 2:05 pm #12811AndrewSpectatorThere are now 8 places taken and the Course provider is booked for Saturday 19th – Sunday 20th October. I am offering the remaining 4 places to other organisations as I’d like to see them all taken up.
However if you’d like a place, please let me know. I’m sure there are more than 4 Members who don’t know First Aid, but it’s a good thing to be able to at least try to cope if something ever happens

Thanks,
