Halton Gill Bunk Barn
Halton Gill Bunk Barn is situated at the head of Littondale, the most quiet and beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales, in the centre of the National Park. It lies at the foot of Penyghent, one of the famous Three Peaks, near the Pennine Way and the Dales Way, and the area is criss-crossed by a number of public footpaths. The Cowan family farmed in Halton Gill for nearly 150 years, and converted the traditional stone barn to provide high quality, low cost group accommodation. Local craftsmen have retained the original charm and features of the buildings while providing very comfortable accommodation to the highest standards.
Besides walking there is climbing and pot-holing locally, fishing and pony trekking at Kilnsey, and a full range of outdoor activities in the area. We recommend Dave Gallivan at Yorkshire Dales Guides for orienteering, team building and guided walks. The nearest pub, The Queen’s Arms in Litton (tel-01756 770096) has good food and a warm welcome. The nearest shops are 10 miles away, and local supermarkets deliver to Halton Gill.
Bunk Barn Accommodation and Facilities
The Bunk Barn sleeps 40 people in 8 separate bedrooms. At the entrance is a large, efficient drying room, where we also keep the playfield games and equipment. The covered entrance porch leads to a large slate-flagged reception hall. In the hall are some comfy chairs, the phone, and a football table. The Finnish Sauna is located just off the main hall.
The 8 fully carpeted bedrooms, all with bunks, are on the ground floor, sleeping 3×8, 2×2, 3×4. One “4”, the leader’s room, is a totally self-contained unit, with its own kitchenette, toilet and separate entrance. All the bunks have a blanket and pillow. Please bring your own sleeping bag, pillow case and personal towel.
The separate ladies and gents facilities are also on the ground floor, with 2 toilets, 2 showers and 4 washbasins each.
Upstairs is a large common room with a Pool Table (free to use and with a Ping-Pong top) and ample seating. The larger kitchen/dining-room comfortably seats 40 and is very well equipped with 2 range cookers, 4 fridges, 4 sinks, 2 microwaves, 2 Dualit toasters and kettles, a fridge-freezer and all the equipment you could possibly want in order to enjoy your self-catering. We provide washing-up liquid, tea towels and bin liners.
The Bunkbarn is just outside the village so is safe, quiet and private, and is open all year round. It is warm, welcoming and spacious, with oil-fired central heating, a pay phone, no meters, parking for around 20 cars and a well-maintained one acre play field.

July 5, 2018 at 4:43 pm #11185Richard HarrisonSpectatorGreat Steve, I am looking forward to this our last birthday celebration 10 years ago was a fantastic weekend. I think it will be a good point for further discussion when we meet up as a committee in early August. It would also be a good idea for us to all start having conversations about what everyone would like to do on this date. Last time we had an Adventure Race finishing via a pub to the Bunk Barn, I am not suggesting this for our 70th.
