York Mountaineering Club Participation Statement
York Mountaineering Club welcomes all those with an interest in mountaineering, whether you are a relative beginner, already highly experienced, or somewhere in between. Perhaps you may have done a good deal of hill walking but wish to move on to winter mountaineering, or into rock climbing. We aim to ensure that our club is inclusive and welcoming to all existing and prospective members, and we try to create opportunities for members to improve their experience at all levels.
Whatever the activity, members are expected to be responsible for their own safety, and to contribute to the safety of others. If you are new to an activity, you are asked to gain experience in stages, to learn appropriate skills, and to understand any risks involved. This is because the Club is an association of friends rather than a training organisation or a commercial 'adventure provider'. For these reasons, some of our more 'serious' trips may only be suitable for people with a certain amount of previous experience, and those for whom the trip may be an appropriate next step. You should check this out with the event organiser.
The Club has a diverse membership and we are committed to inclusivity and equal opportunity. Meets and trips offer opportunities for socialising as well for climbing and mountaineering and, while lively debate and freedom of expression is encouraged, we want every member to feel included and welcomed when engaging with the club, both on and off the hill. We therefore expect all members to to demonstrate mutual concern, goodwill and respectful behaviour towards others. The Club is an adult environment, however, and the social element of trips is often not suitable for minors. It is for this reason that club membership, and attendance on club trips, is not open to under 18s.
BMC Participation Statement
The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
